Christmas food and traditions

Christmas is a cherished time for traditional fare in Norway. Many of Tromsø's restaurants focus on seasonal and locally sourced ingredients, and their festive menus are no exception. Treat yourself to lutefisk from Halvors, Northern Norwegian rib at Mathallen, seafood delights at Fiskekompaniet, or locally brewed beer at Tromsø Mikrobryggeri.

For a pause between shopping sprees, the city offers a wealth of cafés and restaurants where you can relax and enjoy the festive ambiance.

In Tromsø, post-Christmas traditions mirror those found elsewhere in Norway. Many shops close on public holidays but reopen on 27 December. The city comes alive on Boxing Day, a traditional celebration day in Tromsø. If you’re visiting on New Year’s Eve, you can witness the fireworks display from the top of the Cable Car. The best views are found at locations like Charlottenlund, Alfheim, Tromsø Maritime School, or Strandtorget in the city centre.

The lights of the Polar Night

In Tromsø, the polar night lasts from late November to mid-January. While many imagine it as a time of constant darkness, the season offers unique opportunities for festive lights to shine even brighter.

During the polar night, the sun remains below the horizon, leaving the city in near-constant twilight. However, the hours around "sunrise" and "sunset" often glow with spectacular colours – hues of pink, yellow, and orange during the morning, and deep blue during the evening twilight. The city sparkles under Christmas lights, complemented by the reflective shimmer of snow.

On the first Sunday of December, the city’s grand Christmas tree is illuminated, and with some luck, the northern lights might add their magic to the scene.

Cultural Highlights of the Festive Season

Tromsø offers a rich and varied cultural programme year-round, and the pre-Christmas period is no exception. There’s something for everyone, from theatre and film to museums and classical Christmas concerts.

Hålogaland Teater is a cultural cornerstone, presenting performances that often embrace Christmas themes during the season. Whether it’s reimagined classics or modern tales, the shows are sure to captivate both heart and imagination.

Verdensteatret, Norway's oldest cinema, features a Christmas programme of timeless classics and inspiring new films, all within a charming and intimate setting steeped in history.

The Arctic Philharmonic also plays a key role in Tromsø’s festive magic. Their popular pre-Christmas concerts, including the annual pre Christmas ballet in collaboration with the Culture School, are a highlight of the season. This year, Cinderella is on the programme – a beloved production that delights audiences of all ages.
