The sherpa stairs in Tromsø

Located close to the Cable Car, the “Sherpa Stairs” are the alternative way to the top of the famous Storsteinnen mountain. With 1203 steps, the hike is a challenge, but numerous resting areas and stunning viewpoints along the way make it accessible for anyone with a medium to high fitness level.

About us

Season: June - October

Using limestone, along with other types of local rock, the Sherpatrappa was built by Sherpa people stemming from the Khumbu region of Nepal. It was built over a period of 3 years and is today one of the most popular hikes in Tromsø for locals and visitors alike.

It can be reached from Tromsø’s city centre by foot (approximately 45 minutes including crossing the Tromsø Bridge) and also by the 26 bus (10 minutes). The climb itself can take anywhere from forty minutes and up. There are various resting stops beside the steps, all featuring some of the best views in the Tromsø region. The neighbouring mountain, Nordfjellet, the island of Tromsø and the mountains surrounding it are just some of the many sights to see from Sherpatrappa. There are also a few stops with dedicated bonfire areas for grilling.

The hike is not only popular with tourists but also with the locals, meaning you will most likely have company on your hike. It is customary to walk on the right side of the path in Norway and also to say “hey” when passing someone!

Between mid-August and the end of October, it is also possible to walk up after nightfall and have a chance to see the Northern Lights. Hiking in the dark must be done with a headlight (other lights, e.g. phone lights, are not strong enough). It gradually gets colder over these two months, especially on the mountain. Please make sure to dress appropriately and check the weather forecast before taking the hike.

After the snow arrives in Tromsø, between November and May, it is not recommended to take these steps. We highly recommend taking the Cable Car instead during this period. Read more here...
