When you think of Tromsø, the northern lights and mountains probably come to mind first. But did you know that the Tromsø region has some of the world's most beautiful beaches? Imagine powdery white sand, crystal-clear water, and a tropical feel—just with slightly cooler swimming temperatures! 

Pack your towel, swimwear, and picnic basket: Here are five favourite beaches in the Tromsø region:

Sandvika, Kvaløya 

Sandvika at Brensholmen is one of the most popular beaches in the area. With its wide sandy beach and turquoise waters, it’s easy to see why it’s a favourite spot for both locals and tourists. The beautiful landscape around Sandvika is perfect for relaxation and picnics. Enjoy long summer days swimming, sunbathing, or taking a peaceful walk along the coast. It’s the perfect family beach.

Otervika, Kvaløya 

Otervika is a beautiful gem at Sandneshamn. The beach is a bit more secluded, making it ideal for those seeking peace and privacy. Otervika is surrounded by unique rock formations and is perfect for a day of swimming, snorkelling, or simply enjoying the tranquillity.

Grøtfjord, Kvaløya 

Grøtfjord is located on the outer side of Kvaløya and is known for its dramatic landscape. The beach in is surrounded by tall and rugged mountains. Crystal-clear water and fine white sand make Grøtfjord a popular recreational spot. In summer, the beach bathes in the midnight sun, creating a magical atmosphere in the evening.

Telegrafbukta, Tromsøya 

Telegrafbukta is near Tromsø city centre and is a popular gathering spot for both locals and visitors. The beach is easily accessible and offers great facilities such as barbecue areas, playgrounds, and paved paths for walking.

Kvitnesvika and Steinsvika on Sommarøy 

Steinsvika and Kvitnesvika are situated on a beautiful islet at Sommarøy. Both beaches are known for their dazzling white sand and crystal-clear water. Small neautiful coves on the outer side of Kvaløya 

On the outer side of Kvaløya, you’ll find many beautiful, small white beaches waiting to be discovered. These hidden gems are best reached by kayak or SUP. Kayaks can be rented at Sommarøy (requires a wet card), while Vervet Adventures in Tromsø city centre offers SUP rentals. For the adventurous, there is also the possibility of combining a beach visit with a mountain hike.
