Urban experiences meet raw Arctic nature
MS Polstjerna
MS Polstjerna (“The Pole Star”) was built in 1949. This sealing vessel sailed for 33 hunting seasons and brought home more than 97,000 seals. The vessel has also been used in many polar expeditions. The entire interior fittings above and below deck are original, along with the sailing rig and small hunting boats still in place. Today, the boat can be admired as a monument to the important tradition of Arctic hunting in the history of Tromsø.
About us
The exhibition SNOWHOW
In the dock under the boat, we present the exhibition SNOWHOW – What the Polar Heroes learned from the Inuit, the Sami and the Arctic Seafarers. The exhibition depicts the prerequisites that Fridtjof Nansen and Roald Amundsen had to have to succeed in their polar expeditions, reflecting on how the Norwegian polar knowhow (snowhow) rests on the knowledge of Arctic natives and North Norwegian Arctic seafarers.
